Ancient Legacy

Ban Chiang

National Museum

Ban Chiang National museum, also known as Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, is located in Nong Han district of  Udonthani  province. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1992. The museum has two parts to it. The first part is for antiques. Here you find anything associated with the ancient Culture of Ban Chiang. You can see ancient tools, household items, artifacts, and pottery items, many of which are over 4,000 years old. All artifacts are showcased very beautifully so that visitors can get as much information as possible about the ancient culture. The second part of the museum is an open-air one and it is in the compound of Wat Po Si Nai. Here you can see the archaeological excavation sites and these sites will give you an idea how the artifacts were buried with the dead. Ban Chiang National Museum is famous world over because the ancient community of Ban Chiang was the precursor to all other pre-historic civilizations of the world. The pottery found in Ban Chiang Archaeological Site is believed to the oldest in the world.

A Lake of Pink Water Lilies

Nong Han, Kumphawapi

Nong Han is a natural source of water covering an area of more than 22,500 rai. This lake is rich in various species of fish, birds, and aquatic plants. Its unique ecosystems are of interest to academics both Thais and foreigners who have come to continuously conduct research and study. During October to February of every year, the water lily plants in the lake will grow above the water surface, produce new leaves and buds, and bloom. The blooming season is from December to February.

Wat Pa Phu Kon

Wat Pa Phu Kon is situated within the area of the Na Yung-Nam Som National Forest Reserve at Ban Na Kham Yai, Tambon Ban Kong, on the seam of 3 provinces: namely, Udonthani, Loei, and Nong Khai. The temple took shape out of the realization of a number of Buddhists in the contribution as well as benefits of the nature and watershed forests, which were gradually being degraded; and also, out of their wish to follow the footsteps of the late King Rama IX in keeping forests fertile. So, they sought permission to use a piece of land within the Na Yung-Nam Som National Forest Reserve as the location to build Wat Pa Phu Kon. Wat Pa Phu Kon is a peaceful place suitable for monks to practice meditation and mental development. The temple's image hall, surrounding pavilions and buildings on the hilltop are of fine Thai architectural design.

Kham Chanot

Naga Island

Kham Chanot is a forest of naturally grown Chanot or Taraw palm trees looking like an islet located in the middle of a paddy field inside Wat Siri Suttho, according to folk legend, the place is a gateway to the underwater world where the Naga Pu Si Suttho and Grandma Naga Si Pathumma. There is a walled concrete Naga walkway leading into forest. All visitors must take off their shoes and walk barefoot. Inside the forested islet, there is a shrine of Grandpa Naga Si suttho and a sacred pond.

Phu Phra Bat

Historical Park

Situated in Amphoe Ban Phue, this archeological site features many ancient ruins and objects dating from prehistory. They are mostly from the Dvaravati, Lop Buri, and Lan Xang periods. The site is in a lush forest called Pa Khua Nam. Within are many rocks of peculiar shapes, the result of a slow-moving glacier millions of years ago. Many of the ruins and objects found in the area were made from the materials found locally and were not built entirely by hand-for instance, a rock decorated as a stupa or chiseled into the shape of a foot. Pre-historic cave paintings, sandstone images and idols, and more are interesting sights to behold.

Clothes Market

Located on Mittraphap Road (Udon-NongKhai) in Ban Na Kha before reaching Wat Nakha Thewi, the market is a gathering of the Ban Na Kha hand-woven textile group and neighboring villages. There are more than 30 shops selling Mi Khid or Khid designed silk cloth, of which each cloth has been woven with beautiful Khid design, and other products from Khid textiles, such as, shirts, pants, skirts, shawls, backrest pillows, and souvenirs.
